navigation of the ship as well as the safety of those on board. Through history
there have been several women who were able to achieve the rank of captain in
the maritime industry, although not without some challenges. Hannah Snell is
one of the earliest women known to have served as a ship’s captain, disguising
herself as a man to join the British navy and eventually rising through the ranks
to become captain.
The Early
Life of Hannah Snell
We embark on the journey into the early years
of Hannah Snell, an English woman born in 1723. Hannah's life changed
dramatically when, at the age of 18 years, she married a Dutch seaman James
Summs. Unfortunately, Summs proved to be quite the unsavory husband. He
squandered Hannah's finances on his own pleasures and deserted her while she
was pregnant. Their child was born and died a year later. It was then that
Snell hatched a plan to use her brother-in-law’s identity and go in search of
her husband.
Hannah's
Military Adventure
Assuming her brother-in-law's name 'James
Gray', Hannah enlisted in the military and joined John Guise's regiment, not
knowing that this decision would change her life forever. She struggled with
difficult training and hostile comrades however she excelled in the military
exercises and earned her place among her peers.
Working on a ship as well as being in the
military in the 18th century would have been a challenging experience. The life
of a seafarer was full of hardships even for those that enjoyed the wonders of
traversing the seas. There would have been harsh working conditions, risk of
disease and food shortages. Snell experienced these hardships and also ended up
in battle where she was injured in the groin. Still, it did not deter her.
The
Unveiling of Hannah Snell
Hannah Snell wasn't just 'a woman in men's
clothing'. She was a woman who risked her life and honour fighting for her
country. Snell was not found out during her voyages. When she finally returned
to Britain she revealed the secret to her shipmates becoming an instant
sensation and source of admiration. When her story broke out after her
honourable discharge, Hannah wasn't shamed or belittled. Instead, her story
became well-known and she was hailed as a heroine with many marveling at her
bravery and determination. She was recognized for her service and even granted
a lifetime pension.
